Habitat For Humanity

One of the things I've been able to do to pass the time while we wait to adopt is various kinds of community service. This week I had the opportunity to be part of a Habitat For Humanity project. For those of you that are not familiar with Habitat, it is a non-profit organization that works to build homes for some of the less privileged. Habitat For Humanity takes donations from all kinds of places (corporations, philanthropists, etc) and then uses the money to buy land and materials to build a house. The entire house is built by volunteers. On top of that, many of the volunteers do do not have building experience. My mother - who was a carpenter - has been volunteering with Habitat for years. It is absolutely amazing to me that over the course of seven weekends an entire house is built. My group helped put up the siding - we managed to get all the siding done that day. It's a great feeling to know you've played a small part in helping a family have a great place to live.
